Warren James CB CBE DL

Mentor / Consultant

Warren is a Shropshire-based leadership consultant and mentor, focussed on behaviours, governance, high performance and strategy, with experience of public, private and charity sectors.

A role as COO at Cheadle Hulme School, until Spring 2024 (a deliberate 3-year step back to ‘doing and learning’), followed long and successful career in the Royal Air Force.

A helicopter pilot and flying instructor in his early service, he has operated all over the world, retiring as an Air Vice-Marshal in January 2021. He interspersed flying with senior leadership functions. This included leading the UK’s helicopter instructor school, a Search & Rescue squadron, commanding an airbase in Shropshire, multinational coordination in the USA and, for his final 3 and ½ years, heading No 22 Group as the Air Officer Commanding – a board-level position – with around 40 separate units and oversight for c.65000 people and a multi-£bn asset base with international outreach.

He has been responsible and accountable for: The UK Military Flying Training System; most of Defence’s Technical Training; International Defence Training; the UK’s most successful apprenticeship programme; the Tedder Leadership Academy (through-career leadership development); the Robson Resilience Academy; the RAF College at Cranwell; 50 RAF Sports; the RAF Air Cadet organisation; and, The Red Arrows display team. He is no stranger to strategic risk and reputation.

A Chartered Manager and Ambassador since 2009, Warren is a board advisor to the People Director Partnership, an Honorary Companion of Lincoln College, a former Honorary of the Worshipful Company of Educators, prior Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and, Chair (designate) of Community Resource (a Shropshire welfare charity).

He was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Shropshire in 2020.

Involved with leadership, human resilience, strategy, inclusion, training and education over many years, Warren endeavours to find relaxation via a mountain bike, rowing machine and digital photography.
